ARTIST'S STATEMENTMy work springs from whatever occupies my curiosity at the time. I try to use my art to explore the world and create something that will be exciting to look at. Some of my work is sparked by reading, some pieces are inspired by other art or by issues in the world that seem to be important. But, in the process of creation the work often changes so much that it takes on its own life and its own meaning. Perhaps that's why I enjoy using wood as a medium. It sets its own time frame for allowing itself to be shaped, and insists on its own presence as a partner in the final piece. I try to use wood as a painter uses color-- as an expressive element in the sculpture. At the same time, I want to defy the traditions of woodworking. I will sew wood together, let the nails and glue show, leave the textures of the chisels. Robert Loebell |
